Pharmaceutical industry: Combining data matrix codes and anti-counterfeiting technology is essential

3S at the BPI Entrepreneurs’ Day in Berlin

3S Simons Security Systems GmbH presented its comprehensive range of anti-counterfeiting technologies for the pharmaceutical industry at the recent Entrepreneurs’ Day of the German Pharmaceutical Industry Association (BPI). BPI represents the full spectrum of activities of the pharmaceutical industry on both a national and international level; it consists of approximately 240 companies with around 70,000 employees. The Entrepreneurs’ Days are organised by the association on a regular basis, offering representatives of the pharmaceutical industry the opportunity to find out about the latest developments and trends in the field of anti-counterfeiting technologies.

3S pointed out at an early stage that it is important to back up the planned coding system securPharm with a proven anti-counterfeiting solution such as SECUTAG®. "Only combining tracing and anti-counterfeiting technologies can stop counterfeit drugs from entering the legal supply chain between pharmaceutical manufacturers and pharmacies as set out in the EU Directive 2011/62," said Rolf Simons, Managing Director of 3S, at the BPI Entrepreneurs’ Day. "There should be no tolerance, no unreported cases in terms of drugs, in particular those from pharmacies or other sources such as the Internet; consumers must be able to identify fake drugs which have to be removed from the supply channels by the manufacturer." SECUTAG® ensures protection of both the medical packaging and its data matrix code.

3S will present the combination of the data matrix code and anti-counterfeiting technology at this year’s BPI Annual General Meeting, which takes place in Dresden, Germany, on 16 June 2015 (Venue: Hilton Dresden Hotel, An der Frauenkirche 5, 01067 Dresden). Another presentation will take place at the BPI Entrepreneurs’ Day in Berlin on 12 November 2015.

CeMAT 2014: Combining traceability and counterfeit protection based on SECUDATA®

3S at the world's leading trade fair for intralogistics in Hannover

“Legally binding counterfeit protection for the intralogistics sector” - under this motto 3S will be showcasing its current product portfolio at CeMAT 2014. The focus will be on the industry solution SECUDATA® which allows users to combine traceability of goods and counterfeit protection. Further highlights presented by 3S will include legally binding documentation using SECUDOC®, the protection of primary and secondary packaging with SECUPACK® and direct product protection based on SECUPRODUCT®.

3S security solutions can be meticulously and precisely applied onto nearly all solid matters, among which metals, synthetics, paper products, glass, alloys and textile fabrics. Due to the fact that only a standard pen microscope with 100x magnification is required, it is not necessary to set up a laboratory for analysis. This means costly investments in skilled labour and technical equipment as well as time-consuming verification procedures are no longer required. Moreover, 3S anti-counterfeiting technology can swiftly be integrated into all production and logistics processes - without complex changes being necessary. Such a protection strategy will not only reduce control costs along the supply chain, but it will also strengthen the corporate image of logistics and packaging service providers because the system can be communicated to the public. Companies using 3S industry solutions for product protection can also benefit from a good selling point: Their customers can buy the company's product safe in the knowledge that it is the original.

From 19 to 23 May, 3S will be presenting its wide range of product protection systems at CeMAT in Hanover, at the special show "Innovative Logistics Solutions" in hall 27, stand C45/2.

PrintStar Award 2013

3S Simons Security Systems is finalist of the 2013 PrintStars Award

3S Simons Security Systems GmbH has once again been shortlisted for the prestigious PrintStars Innovation Prize. The leading specialist for anti-counterfeit solutions has been nominated for the second year in a row in the "Packaging and Labelling" category. 3S had entered its new OTF security label specifically designed to protect security-relevant devices and premium packaging used for quality products.

In 2012, 3S won the PrintStars Bronze Award for its security labels produced for the testing equipment manufacturer INGUN on the basis of 3S' counterfeit protection system SECUTAG®. PrintStars is the annual Innovation Award of the German Printing Industry honouring the best printing products of the year. More than 900 print buyers, print service providers, agencies, photo studios, publishers, prepress providers and print finishing companies participated in this year's contest. The Award Ceremony will take place in Stuttgart, at the Liederhalle Culture and Congress Centre, on 16 October 2013.

3S' OTF security label has been named a finalist for this year's Innovation Prize. A panel of 22 experts selected this anti-counterfeit solution which ensures that online terminals used for cashless payment transactions, for example, are protected against tampering. The advantage of the new closure seal: It is based on Secure-ID® technology and can be completely removed without leaving any residue behind. In contrast to Void films, adhesive residues which might contaminate the protected device are thus avoided. Only a gentle push or a slight increase in temperature will cause the OTF security label to show number strings, logos or different visual elements so that any attempt to tamper with a device or packaging is instantly identified. Based on the counterfeit protection system SECUDATA®, micro colour code particles were also added to the label enabling identification of originals.

Innovation Award 2012

3S wins award for its security labels

The winners of the Innovation Award PrintStars 2012 have been chosen: In the category "Printing Products: Packaging", it is 3S Simons Security Systems GmbH that won the Bronze Award, honouring its security labels which were developed by 3S for the testing equipment manufacturer INGUN. The annual Innovation Award of the German Printing Industry honours the best printing products of the year.

INGUN GmbH with headquarters in Constance uses 3S' security labels to secure the packaging of its contact pins, which are used for testing circuit boards for mobile phone among others. The company is one of the world's leading suppliers of testing equipment. When it comes to counterfeit protection, it relies on the micro colour code technology SECUTAG® by 3S. Special closure seals including all technical data and the micro colour code particles are affixed crosswise over all four sides of the packaging. The contact pins are thus unambiguously identifiable as originals, unauthorized opening of the boxes would be detected immediately. The labelling process was integrated into the production and packaging procedure without process changes.

This year, the organisers of PrintStars received 396 applications for products in 16 categories and for eight special prizes, a lot more than in the past eight years. More than 900 print shops, agencies, photo studios, publishers, prepress providers and print finishing companies as well as print buyers with headquarters or branch offices in Germany and German vocational and technical schools participated in the competition. The Award Ceremony, which was part of the "PrintNight" event, took place in Stuttgart, at the Liederhalle Culture and Congress Centre, on 9 October 2012.

Every second medicine counterfeited

German customs authorities have reported a new record result with more than five million pharmaceuticals seized in 2010. The number of medicines traded via the Internet is growing steadily. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), every second pharmaceutical bought online is counterfeited. Not only anabolic drugs and potency pills can be purchased via online mail-order, prescription-only antibiotics and medicine for cancer treatment are also illegally offered.

Operation Pangea IV, coordinated by Interpol, the World Customs Organization (WCO) and national pharmacovigilance authorities, took action against the illegal online trade of pharmaceuticals from 20th to 27th September 2011 in over 80 countries. The results are alarming: All over the world, including Germany, illegal medicines can be purchased via the Internet. Many websites have a professional appearance, yet trade with illegal and counterfeit pharmaceutical products.

Most buyers are not able to distinguish original from counterfeit medicine. The operators of the Internet platforms hide behind anonymous letterbox companies. This shows how important it is to label genuine pharmaceuticals as originals. Following our motto „every product that affects people’s health or lives must be identifiable by anybody at any time as an original – without doubt“, 3S supports the secure identification of pharmaceuticals with the SECUTAG® micro colour-codes.

More than 2.4 million counterfeits seized at German borders

The current German customs statistics for 2010 has been published

The annual German statistics of the Zentralstelle Gewerblicher Rechtsschutz (Central Department for Industrial Property Protection, ZGR) has been published. In 2010, German customs authorities have seized over 2.4 million counterfeit goods. This amounts to 23,713 cases, 146 percent more than 2009. Especially internet orders of fan articles, mainly for the World Cup 2010, immensely increased the seizures in postal traffic.

The breakdown of overall value is lead by the category watches, followed by clothing and sports shoes. Pharmaceuticals, toys, electronic goods and mechanical engineering parts also rank among the top seizures - all products that threaten health and lives of consumers. A good reason for 3S to further contribute to the fight against counterfeits!
